About Kaitaia, New Zealand
Kaitaia is a small holiday town, and the most northern town in New Zealand. It lies at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula, about 5 kilometres from the southernmost point of Ninety Mile Beach. Kaitaia enjoys a rich multicultural heritage - a fact shown by the town signs being written in English, Maori and Croation.
Activities in Kaitaia include horse treks, quad bike rides, surfing, kayaking, kitesurfing, flying, diving, fishing, golfing, and shooting.
About an hour and a half drive north up the Aupouri Peninsula will bring you to Cape Reinga - the furthest northern point you can drive to in New Zealand. Here the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, in a spectacular swirl of currents. A gnarled pohutukawa tree believed to be over 800 years old rests at the northernmost tip of the cape. A short stroll from the Cape Reinga car park will bring you to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse and views of the Three Kings Islands.
